Career change isn't always difficult. I know people that have been made redundant on a Friday. Walked out of their job with a nice financial settlement. No money worries for a considerable time. No pressure. Two weeks later they walk into a new role, on a larger package than the one they just left.


For others, things are not quite that way. In fact career change is downright confusing.

In this changing world where businesses are shrinking, assistants are going virtual, business managers are online and media is oh so social, lots of roles are disappearing forever. So what do you do if your job really is redundant and your career change is permanent?

Here are some great steps for your successful career change

Self Audit
What are your unique abilities? By sitting down and assessing your strengths and weaknesses, instances where you have excelled in the past and difficulties you encountered, you will have a clearer idea where to start looking for your career change
It is really important to not only identify your strengths to promote them to potential employers but also to keep your own value in perspective. Confidence is key. When you exude an air of self-belief it gives others permission to believe in you too. Of course the opposite is also true.
Your biggest asset is a positive outlook. See the redundancy as an opportunity to find a way to get even happier during your working life. If you can find a new role quickly you might also stay ahead financially. Wouldn’t that be great?
Job Search
Over 70% of vacancies are hidden. That means that they are never advertised. They are discussed via networks or sent out to recruiters and headhunters. It is particularly important for successful career change to put yourself in the path of the key people in the industry you are searching within
Identify the key recruiters within your area and speak to some of them. Sometimes an agency will do more work for you if you give them your details exclusively (for a set amount of time, not indefinitely). If that is the case and you like the recruiter then that could be your route to the career change you seek
Get networking. Speak to people you know and let them know that you are looking for XYZ. Ask them to let you know if they hear of anything and pass your contact details on as and when they can and it is appropriate
List your profile on key jobsites for your skill-set. Set the auto-emails to let you know every time a new role is posted that might interest you
Create or update your page on LinkedIn. 76% of all companies that are recruiting right now are using LinkedIn to proactively search for candidates. That includes all of those hidden jobs that we never get to hear of
Preparing Your Marketing Material
Analyse your CV and be prepared to engage a professional to either write or advise you on the content and format it should take. You only get one chance at a first impression and this is it. Create a good to great LinkedIn page. LinkedIn is packed to the rafters with recruiters; some working directly for corporates, others working for agencies. They will stumble upon your profile. Keep your social media ‘new-job friendly’. What do I mean by that? Consider what you post and how you talk about things online. If you already happen to be Facebook friends with someone from the company that turns out to be your next employer what are they going to know about you? If your new CEO follows you on Twitter because he shares your passion for fly-fishing what might his impression of you be?
Interview Success
It is your job to show the interviewer that you are the candidate they have been looking for. You can do the job, you want the job and you are going to be happy and content in the role for some time to come (if that is true)
           Keep your self-esteem high and be very positive. About every thing. Remember that the interviewer isn’t going to believe you can do the job if you don’t appear confident in your own abilities
           Know how you will benefit the role and the Company and be prepared to discuss this with the interviewer. Remember to keep your answers relevant to this role. Be specific and be targeted in your replies
           Be authentic and sincere. If there are things you don’t know or have never done then be honest. Also explain where and when you have demonstrated a quick ability to learn and adapt before
           Smile. Be friendly, be conversational, be helpful and be nice about your previous employers
           Have some great questions to ask them pre-prepared. It is important that this really is a good fit. Ask the questions that you need answers to to enable you to determine if this is indeed your right next step
Negotiating the Offer
The best time to get the remuneration package you want is pre-employment. Once you are onboard you are likely to be subject to standard pay rise scales. Getting it right on the way in is a good idea
           The first choice for the role is the one with the offer. Typically a couple of thousand pounds is not going to change a Company’s view that you are the best candidate
           You might already have a salary scale. Research the current market rates for this role and location. Have a clear picture of what the market will support and what you are worth. Also know what you will accept
           Wait for them to mention money and a definite amount. Be willing to look at the whole package rather than just the basic salary but be realistic about what you will be happy with
           Take time to think about all of the aspects. Ask to see a copy of the offer in writing and sleep on it for a few days. Consider your happiness to do the role, your desire to work for this company and the reality of the financial elements of the offer you have been made
