If it’s good enough for an Olympian

No-one would question an Olympic athlete having a coach and committing to ongoing training

 
In fact you would be surprised to hear that an athlete trying out for the Olympian team wasn’t training and giving their sport their undivided attention. If an athlete wants to make it to the top of their game then a high-level of commitment, a dedicated approach to training and an unwavering belief are all essential components of day-to-day living.
 
So that is how you go about a career as a sports person.
 

What about if your game is business? What would you do then?

 
This is a huge stumbling block for a lot of people. You get a job, it pays the bills, you get a better job, you get bigger bills, you get a pay-rise, you improve your lifestyle, you get a better job, you improve your lifestyle some more and you get a few more bills.
 
If you want success, if you want to be a top achiever, if you want to make something of yourself via your career is that enough?
 
Setting your alarm, hitting snooze a couple of times, dragging yourself to the shower, grumbling to yourself as you meet the other commuters on your preferred route to work, getting through the day, going home and watching some TV, dragging yourself to bed and preparing to do the same again tomorrow. Does that sound like your kind of day? Does that sound like the day of an Olympian?


If you want similar success to that of an Olympic athlete you need to practice their habits.

 
Training with focus. Committing each and every day to excellence. Going above and beyond what is required to become the best that you can be at your specialist area of business.
 
Listening to the late Jim Rohn last week I was much taken with his ideas on obtaining more money.
 
He discussed ways to improve your wealth from a starting point of the minimum wage. Of course you can wait for the government to up the minimum; might take a while but that will happen.
 
You can wait for your Company to up their minimum; that might only happen when they are forced by law but again it will happen. You can campaign and if you can get a few colleagues on side you can suggest a strike to force your Company into action; not a very popular thing to do and it takes a large percentage of the workforce to make a difference but it could work.
 
Or you can improve yourself to the point where you are infinitely more valuable, either to your current employer or someone else. Not only is this possible for everybody, it is quicker, easier and has more guaranteed results than the other options. What a great choice to make.
 
Making yourself more valuable is a very responsible way to manage your career. It is the choice of leaders. It is the choice of empowered people. It is the choice of Olympians!
