I Want A Job

This morning I read an article written by a job leaver.

 
Published in yesterday’s New York Times it was entitled ‘Why I am Leaving Goldman Sachs’.
 
With 366 comments listed, I thought it was an article worth reading. I was right!
 
The basic thread was that Goldman Sachs have changed their values during the last twelve years.
 
Previously a client centric company who valued their clients needs above most else, Goldman Sachs are now a profit centric company.
 

In this economy everyone has to follow profit don’t they?

 
Well, no, they don’t! Not exclusively anyway.
 
You see, having no interest in the best interests of your clients’ means at some point you will fail them. Even before that happens, they will lose that warm glow of being a treasured asset.
 
With everyone vying for business, someone else will give them special consideration and they will move their money and their business elsewhere … leaving Goldman Sachs (or a n other similarly profit focused company) to fall into decline.
 
Meanwhile, being purely client focused and having no set focus on the finances can mean a business never hits the heady heights of profit!
 
There has to be a balance. But the balance has to be weighted in the favour of clients and their needs.
 

So what does this have to do with job search?

 
Everything… and nothing. If you are looking for job security, prospects, a great working environment and friendly helpful colleagues you need to work for a client centric company.
 
Any organisation that will do anything in the name of profits is going to have low values on personal needs; their clients and yours. They will expect you to do whatever it takes to bring the business in; can you do that? You will be working with people who, to coin a phrase, would sell their own grandmother; do you like people like that? Will you prosper in such a company? Will it make you feel good about yourself?
 
Jim Rohn said: ‘We are the sum total of the five people we spend the most time with’
 
My next question is a tough one to consider. If you work in a company that doesn’t care about people and their needs, and we become the sum of the five people we spend the most time with, will you become that kind of person too?
 
Is that how you see yourself? Is that who you want to become?
 
Finding a new role can be tough. You get an interview, it goes well. You get the job offer. Hurrah!
 
But you have a bad feeling about the company. If you had another offer on the table, you wouldn’t take this job. But you haven’t got another offer and you have bills to pay …
 
Sometimes the decisions are tough. I hear it said: ‘In an ideal world I would … ‘ but its not an ideal world
 
My question to you is, will it ever be an ideal world for you if you sell yourself short?

Yesterday a client (and friend) went for such an interview. Desperate to find a new job, she found herself being interviewed for a role which requires security clearance (requiring a financial investment by her of £500). Then the job is not going to be what she wants. But it’s a job and she has the offer.
 
Now you might say that any job that requires an initial investment is a no-go. But what about that feeling that it just isn’t right. Not what you want. Would that stop you accepting it anyway? Would you feel brave enough to keep looking and trust that something better will come your way?
 
Not all companies are created equal. Even large corporates get it wrong. Do you want any job, even if it means working for one of the bad ones?
