Can You Be Over-Qualified For The Job?

by Julie Holmwood

Today I was almost live on BBC Radio 2

I was in the wings for a live debate on the BBC Radio 2 Jeremy Vine show.
Graduates in Scotland are being advised to leave their degree off their CV when they’re applying for low-level roles. The thinking being it makes them look over-qualified and therefore unattractive for the job.

So is there any such thing as ‘over-qualified’?

Does that really exist?
Will a company turn you away for being too smart? Too clever? Too knowledgeable? Too experienced?
The answer, as you may fear, is yes.
And no.

Any company who promotes from within wants smart people.

Any boss who wants help from an employee who can over deliver on a job that needs doing well, wants to hire a clever person.
Any company looking for new ideas and initiatives to make their company leaner, smarter, faster, wants to hire a knowledgeable person.
Any organisation looking to win the race to profit against their competitors, wants to hire an experienced person.
With one caveat.
They want to hire a person who wants to work for them. In that job. For their company.
What they don’t want is the candidate who has made 1000 applications in the vain hope of seeing which piece of mud (if any) sticks to the wall.
Ask yourself; do I want this job, working for that company?
If the answer is yes, let that shine through your tailored application.
You’ve no doubt heard that people on the other end of a telephone can tell when you smile? Well, they can see you want their job through your application too.
Make sure you want it.
